Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju announced on Wednesday that the Monsoon Session of Parliament will begin on July 21 and continue till August 12, marking the first session after the Operation Sindoor counter-strike and the Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir.
Both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha are set to convene at 11 AM on July 21, following a recess of over three months.
The session is expected to be politically charged, with the Opposition pressing for a special discussion on the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed 26 lives, and India’s military response on May 7, dubbed Operation Sindoor.
Opposition leaders, under the INDIA bloc, have already written to the Centre demanding urgent parliamentary debate. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, in a post on X, reiterated the request, stating,
“There are serious questions facing the nation — the Pahalgam attack, the killing of civilians in Poonch, Uri, Rajouri, and the recent ceasefire announcements. While the government has briefed foreign countries and media, Parliament has been kept in the dark.”
The Opposition accuses the Centre of bypassing elected representatives on issues involving national security and foreign policy.
Adding further intensity to the session, the government is likely to move an impeachment motion against Delhi High Court Judge Yashwant Varma, who is under scrutiny following the discovery of “burnt cash” at his residence. The Supreme Court’s in-house inquiry committee submitted its findings last month, which were forwarded to the Prime Minister and the President.
Sources indicate that Minister Rijiju has begun consultations with political parties regarding the motion. If tabled, this would mark a rare judicial impeachment proceeding in Parliament.
With a high-stakes political and legislative agenda, the Monsoon Session is poised to be one of the most contentious and closely watched sessions in recent years.
